Contrary to screenwriting gurus, voice-over can be a handy narrative device. By speaking directly to the audience, rather than dramatizing, voice-over cuts through the running time. It can also cut down on resources. Just don’t overdo it. Overbaked voice-overs sidestep drama, and leave little to interpretation. Imagine if everything were explained to you secondhand, rather than witnessing it yourself.

For an excellent example of dramatic voice-over, look no farther than Goodfellas.

The garage became stuffy, so we decided to head out and get some fresh air.

No, this isn’t location scouting in the professional, industry term, where often paperwork and legal matters become involved. We mean it in the way that guerrilla filmmakers mean it: “We don’t have a permit. Run!” (0:22). Not everyone can pay up to city hall or be insured. Sometimes the best way is to wing it without [official] permission, and hope nobody cares. This may sound like inept advice, but the realm of independent filmmaking is without many luxuries…

The best way to learn about sound design, hands on, is to shoot a short film without any recorded audio or dialog. Mix and match the sound elements you think will fit your creative vision; because sound design is a lot more open-ended than you think.

Ever notice the dreamy quality of a British sitcom? How about the “shellshock” look used in war movies? And we’re all familiar with the look of an amateur home video, which can be…surreal. Believe it or not, these effects are created in the camera’s shutter speed, and very rarely in post-production.

So what’ll it be? Fast, jittery frame rates, or the usual slo-mo Matrix ripoff?

Peter Says:
So at five o’clock Pacific Standard time, ABC will air the 80th Annual Academy Awards. Yeah, yeah, we know—there’s a bunch of talk about how people these days don’t care about it anymore, kinda like LOST and the presidential election. And we all know how great the internet is, how a vast majority’ll probably Tivo the broadcast and upload it onto YouTube.

But if a live television broadcast is still good for one thing, it’s in guessing what’ll happen next. Without further ado, Sean and I have picked our likely Oscar nominations. No, we haven’t seen all the movies that are up for Oscars…but then again neither have some of the Academy voters (yes, it’s true).

Sean Says:
Hey everyone. I’m not able to write too much ATM (I’m actually typing this from my cellphone while shopping at the Brea Mall), but I do have my opinion of which films should win, and will be sitting at home in just a few hours, tuned in to Channel 7.

Best Picture: “There Will Be Blood”
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis for “There Will Be Blood” Winner!
Best Actress: Marion Cotillard for “La Vie en rose” Winner!
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem for “No Country for Old Men” Winner!
Best Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett for “I’m Not There”
Best Director: Paul Thomas Anderson for “There Will Be Blood”
Best Original Screenplay: Diablo Cody for “Juno” Winner!
Best Adapted Screenplay: Paul Thomas Anderson for “There Will Be Blood”
Best Cinematography: Roger Deakins for “No Country for Old Men”
Best Editing: Christopher Rouse for “The Bourne Ultimatum” Winner!

Peter Says:
Certainly, this is a dark year for movies, with choices such as No Country and Blood. So dark and downbeat, in fact, that I suspect Juno stands a fair chance of taking home plenty of Oscars, if only because it is the least pessimistic of the major contenders. But lets not forget about what happened to last year’s Little Miss Sunshine…

Best Picture: “No Country for Old Men” Winner!
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis for “There Will Be Blood” Winner!
Best Actress: Julie Christie for “Away From Her”
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem for “No Country for Old Men” Winner!
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Ryan for “Gone Baby Gone”
Best Director: Joel, Ethan Cohen for “No Country for Old Men” Winner!
Best Original Screenplay: Diablo Cody for “Juno” Winner!
Best Adapted Screenplay: Joel, Ethan Cohen for “No Country for Old Men” Winner!
Best Cinematography: Seamus McGarvey for “Atonement”
Best Editing: Christopher Rouse for “The Bourne Ultimatum” Winner!

A shame that David Fincher’s Zodiac lucked out of last year’s Oscars, and managed to miss out on this year’s as well. However, I doubt it would’ve been given much of a nod. Fincher’s image as a director leans heavily on the commercial side (i.e. some consider him less of an artist), and principle photography of Zodiac relied on liberal use of computer generated scenery and effects, which many consider to be less craftsman-like versus the real thing. As great as the cinematography is, it was shot on a Viper, an all-digital camera. Digital has yet to win the respect of the proponents of film stock, and so yet again Zodiac has, in effect, nailed its own coffin. Had it been nominated for anything, my guesses go to Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Sound Editing.

The term “ideal lighting” may sound pretentious, but we’re not here to impose style. Lighting is ideal when it does not conflict with your finished product; because post-production will not fix everything. Don’t expect to Photoshop your movie as you would a photograph. At best, poor lighting can be bandaged in post; but the wound remains in the form of degraded video, like excess noise.

At the end of the episode, we talk about guerrilla filmmaking, and so decided to shoot ourselves talking inside of a Starbuck’s. Please excuse the audio, as we only had one RF microphone (those suckers are expensive).

Film buffs adore tracking shots the way the Guinness Book of World Records adore a hot dog eating champion. But tracking shots accomplish a lot more than meets the eye. As with Orson Welles’ B-movie masterpiece, “Touch of Evil,” the opening shot remains one of the most famous examples of a sustained tracking shot. Not only does it execute a glorious 3:30 shot in one stroke, but it becomes more than just a visual novelty.

Tracking shots lock the subject in a graceful choreography of camera and scenery, where the actors dance with the DP. While a hot dog champion is still a hot dog champion (but we still think they’re cool).

Today’s lesson is this: there’s usually a lot more going on behind the scenes of a movie. In an industry full of stress and overwork, “movie magic” results from what the editor chooses to leave out.

Sort of a long episode, as we decided to include Peter’s old short film. It’s about four minutes, and it’s not really a true short film so much that it documents a random night out. And stay tuned for our editorial rambling at the end.

If you’re getting started in filmmaking, one of the best ways to practice is to carry a point-and-shoot camera everywhere you go. And as Peter repeatedly states, writing is important, too. Be sure to spend an equal amount of time with your old pencil and paper.

We’ve all heard of continuity, but what about discontinuity?

Discontinuity is the black sheep of the family. All the other shots flow together and behave like all good continuities should. But discontinuity picks fights, hangs out at MacDonald’s, and listens to rap music. It sticks out like a sore thumb; but like a Goth kid, that’s exactly what it wants. Now why would anybody insert a shot that doesn’t “flow” with the scene? Watch the episode to find out. Also, in our editorial rant, find out why switching to a Mac isn’t always necessary.

For some trivia, the title (something we wondered about) comes from the name of the street where the Bad Robot production company resides. And if you’re wondering what camera they used, the majority was shot with the HD version of the camera we shoot our episodes with. However, for the shots that required a lot of CG, they brought out the Viper and a Sony CineAlta.

Also, if you haven’t seen it already, you be the judge. And here’s the interview with J.J. Abrams that we mentioned.

Five years since “Punch-Drunk Love,” Paul Thomas Anderson has returned with a loose adaptation of Upton Sinclair’s book, Oil!, and proves that his vision is just as insane as his material. If his Adam Sandler dramedy went under the radar, then “There Will Be Blood” is a grandiose thunderclap to all the critics and Academy voters; a tour-de-force to be reckoned with. Regardless of those who preach its perfection, or to those who say it lacks the operatic drama imposed by its otherwise meticulous staging, it does prove one thing: the idea of the auteur is alive and well.

Despite criticisms, this film is too easily recommended. Everything it accomplishes, it does in spades, and stars and stripes, and all the colors of the rainbow.

It’s a little sloppy, but we’ll iron out the kinks with each movie we review. They’re shot the moment we walk out of the theater, and so our thoughts and opinions are completely fresh and uncontaminated… assuming that has anything at all to do with a quality review.

Oh yes, Version 2.0. It has been a long time coming, and it hasn’t even arrived yet, but when it does (and it will), expect a lot of changes. We make no promises other than the promise to keep at it, to keep trying with this website. No doubt movie reviews, static lessons, Clip Show, and the obligatory TZ episodes will snatch any free time out of our hands; but this is what we do with our free time. At least until we win the lottery. If we did, we’d use the money to quit our jobs and do this gig full time.

Things have been busy here at Take Zer0. By ‘busy’ we mean holiday partying and playing Sean’s new Wii. But that hasn’t stopped us from putting out another episode.

We’ll go over the basics of camera angles. Didn’t we talk about camera angles last time? Well, yes, that’s precisely what we talked about. This time, instead of being literal (low-angle, camera tilt, etc…), we’ll be talking theoretically (what a camera can represent). Just watch. This is more important than you think.

There’s pre-production, production, and post-production. This episode highlights the roles regarding the middle process. There are the obvious ones, like the director. Then there are ones you probably never heard of. But this is the contest episode, after all, and so we took a few creative liberties in having a little fun for ourselves. As for the self-deprecating commentary track, directors tend to do that…

Our apologies for delaying this episode. But we’re back on schedule and already have two more new shows ready to go!

Clifton, over at fusionfox, has agreed to design v2.0 of Take Zer0. When it goes live, expect weekly video reviews of movies, a shorter but more comprehensive series of tutorials, as well as our usual episodes. We also plan to start Clip Show.

Work and school, the fog has finally lifted out of our daily grind. Not entirely, but Sean and I can go back to being amateur filmmakers with overblown ideals. Oh yeah, we’re back to our usual selves, naïvely waiting to have our cherries popped by the studio system. We sat down with Raquel in a Starbucks one night and dished out story ideas. Raquel pitched a semi-autobigraphical character study. Mine is called Night of the Intruder, a low rent mystery via The Twilight Zone. Eh.

You may recognize today’s video. It was posted a few months back; but it was rough and incomplete. So if you feel like taking a spell of deja vu, the short is called Two Years Ago. I wrote it in thirty minutes, storyboarded in an hour, and shot the rest in the same night. The purpose of such haste was to illustrate the ease of short filmmaking; that if you felt like making something, then make it. (It also helps if your actor stands still and never moves anywhere…)

Look forward to regular episodes soon. We already shot a few.

Talk about busy. Sean and I have the sort of schedule that leaves us little time to smell the roses; and if we are smelling roses, it’s only because we should be doing something else. We’ve been especially busy working with our friend Neil Patel, who on the off-hand might be able to provide us with a new place to shoot our episodes (Sean’s beloved garage will inevitably run short of space). Concerning our own personal schedules, Sean has been haggling with a few web designers for TZ v2.0, as well as doing his darnest to squeeze in time for Zelda.

As for me, I only just started Zelda; nevermind the hundred-twenty page screenplay I have due at the end of the semester.

Without further delay, our apologies. As usual, here’s a short from our “vault,” called Sean and Peter. It was written, directed and edited by Sean, and pretty much shot over the span of a single evening. As always in these older videos, we had nobody else behind the camera. That moving dolly shot was accomplished with an electric screwdriver. That same shot also took us seven straight hours to get right.

Man, were we insane back then.

Today we’re finally announcing the the winner of the first Take Zer0 contest. It was a difficult decision (with over 7 pages of entries when printed), but Peter and I both came to a decision. To all those who submitted ideas but didn’t win, plan on having many more contests in the future!

Also, we’re working hard on version 2 of our website, so new episodes may be delayed. Expect MUCH more content in the near future.

We know, we know. We said we would have a contest this week, but unfortunately we only had time to shoot half the episode. We’ll still be giving away a camera. And trust us, you’re going to want this camera. IT CAN SEE THROUGH CLOTHES.

We’ll finishing shooting it this weekend.

Anyway, since we didn’t have the contest episode ready, here’s a “making of” video of our old short film, In Memory of CameraFace.

And since we skipped shooting an episode last week to watch Superbad with a friend, there’s a quick review of the movie at the end.

Peter and I were a little busy this weekend, so we decided to go through our archives and dig out an old short film we made. This is a few years old, so the quality might not be up to our latest episodes or shorts, but it still tells its story well enough.

Every single shot in this short was filmed with our home made fig rig.

Here we explain the core rules of how to neatly cut footage. Because proper editing is what prevents a movie from becoming a slideshow. It is also the only thing that keeps the audience from batting their eyes left-to-right along the screen, where the subject is like a ball in a tennis match. The eyes do grow weary, and there are better ways to cut.

Unless, of course, the movie really happens to be about tennis.

We’ll cover:

Affinity, 30/30 Rule, Moving Cameras

Now imagine if that camera took a picture every 1/24th of a second. The shutter speed, the aperture, and the gain would all have to be adjusted. Of course, if your pocket camera had an aperture, it would cease to be an ordinary pocket camera.

It would be a video camera, which is what this episode is all about.

Oh the first act of a movie. Here we tell you what usually happens before the “Inciting Incident”—the moment in the first act that propels the rest of the story into motion. As an introduction into creative storytelling: Don’t ever allow the inciting incident to be boring. And as a bit of added philosophy, when all else fails, copy Goodfellas.

Yes. Audio is pretty dang important. Yet it still is one of the most overlooked crafts in the industry. In this episode we explain why, in most cases, audio can even be more relevant than video. The point is made with sound effects; or how sound effects, used stylistically rather than realistically, can enhance a scene.
What happened was that, at the last minute, we had to shoot a sample episode for a client of ours.

So here is a video of my sister, Amy, the robot. In her spare time, she’s programmed to paint. She once attempted to outdo me by
